Frequently asked questions
How much tax do I pay on ETF gains?
For equity ETFs only 70 % of the gain is taxed. With 26.375 % tax that means an effective rate of about 18.5 % on the gain – before the saver's allowance.
What is the saver's allowance?
1,000 € per person per year (2,000 € for joint filers) of capital income are tax-free. Give your bank an exemption order (Freistellungsauftrag) so it does not withhold tax.
Can I get capital gains tax back?
Yes, with the tax return (Anlage KAP) – e.g. if you did not use your allowance or your personal tax rate is below 25 % (Günstigerprüfung).
