Frequently asked questions
What return should I assume?
For long-term planning many people use 5–7 % for a globally diversified equity ETF. That is not a promise: single years can be strongly negative.
How are ETF gains taxed in Germany?
With capital gains tax of 25 % plus solidarity surcharge (and church tax if applicable). For equity ETFs 30 % of the gain is tax-free (partial exemption), and 1,000 € a year (2,000 € for couples) is covered by the saver's allowance.
Is a savings plan better than a lump sum?
Statistically a lump sum often performs better because the money is invested longer. A savings plan spreads the entry over time and fits regular income.
