Frequently asked questions
Is crypto tax-free in Germany after one year?
Yes. If you hold Bitcoin or other crypto as a private person for more than one year, the gain from selling it is tax-free (§ 23 EStG).
What is the €1,000 limit for crypto?
An exemption limit: if all your private sales gains in a year are below €1,000, they are tax-free. If they are €1,000 or more, the whole amount is taxable – not just the part above.
How is staking taxed?
Staking and lending rewards are usually other income (§ 22 No. 3 EStG) and tax-free up to €256 a year; above that the full amount is taxed at your personal rate.
