Frequently asked questions
How is an IBAN checked?
The first four characters are moved to the end, letters are converted to numbers (A = 10 … Z = 35), and the resulting number must leave remainder 1 when divided by 97 (ISO 13616).
Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?
No. The check only catches typos. To confirm the recipient, use your bank's verification of payee (name check) when sending money.
How long is a German IBAN?
22 characters: DE, 2 check digits, the 8-digit bank code (BLZ) and a 10-digit account number.
