Is switching worth it?
In 2026 the gap between cheap and expensive statutory insurers is about two percentage points in additional rate. On an average salary that quickly adds up to over a hundred euros a year for you – and the same for your employer. Switching is simple: apply to the new insurer and it handles the rest.
Besides the rate, compare extras such as bonus programmes, dental cleaning or osteopathy subsidies and service quality.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch my health insurer?
Yes. After 12 months of membership you can switch with two months' notice to the end of a month. If your insurer raises its additional rate, you have a special right to cancel.
Does a lower rate mean worse cover?
The legally defined benefits are largely the same for all statutory insurers. Differences lie in extras (e.g. bonus programmes, travel vaccinations, osteopathy) and service.
Who pays the additional rate?
Employee and employer each pay half of the general rate and of the additional rate.
