Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Every sequence of letters or numbers separated by spaces or punctuation counts as one word, so “e-mail” counts as two and “2026” as one. Different tools may differ slightly.
How is reading time calculated?
We assume about 230 words per minute for silent reading and about 140 words per minute for speaking – typical averages for adults.
Is my text saved?
No. Counting happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.
Do spaces count as characters?
In “Characters” yes; “Characters without spaces” excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks.
