How are pensions taxed in Germany?

Since 2005 pensions have been moved step by step to deferred taxation: people who retired in 2005 or earlier pay tax on 50% of their pension, those starting in 2026 on 84%. The tax-free part is fixed as a euro amount in the first full pension year and applies for life.

Tax is only due when taxable income exceeds the basic allowance โ€“ โ‚ฌ12,348 for singles and โ‚ฌ24,696 for married couples in 2026. Many pensioners with an average pension and no other income therefore pay little or no income tax.
