Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is calculated on the purchase price, margin on the selling price. A €100 item sold for €150 has a 50 % markup but a 33.3 % margin.
How do I calculate the selling price from a target margin?
Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). For 40 % margin on €60 cost: 60 ÷ 0.6 = €100.
Do I calculate with net or gross prices?
Businesses calculate net; VAT (19 % or 7 %) is added to the end-customer price.
